GPSA Version 2.12 <ASP> January 12, 1993
========================================
What is GPSA?
==============
The General Purpose System Analyzer (GPSA) is a comprehensive system
analysis and documentation package for professional programmers who
maintain and enhance mainframe COBOL systems.
With GPSA, all COBOL source code for an application or sub-system is
loaded into an Omni-Relational Model (ORM). All system components
(data-names, paragraph-names, programs, copybooks) and their
interrelationships are stored within the ORM.
GPSA provides the facility to view the ORM components through nine
interactive review screens, and to generate 26 system-wide analysis
and documentation reports.
Who uses GPSA?
===============
GPSA is designed as a support tool for professional programmers who
maintain mainframe COBOL systems. Anyone responsible for maintenance
activities (eg, impact analysis, documentation, system understanding,
quality assurance, and re-engineering) will find GPSA a welcome
addition to their programmer's toolbox.
You must be able to transfer COBOL source code to a storage device
(eg, hard disk drive or file server) which is accessible to the PC
where GPSA is installed. Source code does NOT need to be compiled.
Read README.1ST
================
This README.1ST file contains important information about installing
and using GPSA. Please read the entire file before proceeding.
You can print this file with the following DOS command:
copy readme.1st prn

This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware
related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly,
ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical
support for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at
545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442-9427 or send a CompuServe message
via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.

Getting Ready for GPSA
=======================
System Requirements: DOS 3.3+, 640K RAM, Hard Disk Drive, CGA Monitor
Before installing GPSA, we strongly recommend you view the two demos,
and read the IDEAS.TXT and USERGID.TXT documents.
1. The two demos are:
* INTRO - The Introduction to GPSA presentation shows where GPSA
fits into the software lifecycle, and then presents four examples
of using GPSA in software maintenance.
* START - Walks you through all the activities required to load
source code into an Omni-Relational Model (ORM), view the ORM
components, and generate reports. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT USING
GPSA UNTIL YOU VIEW THIS DEMO.
2. The IDEAS.TXT file contains ideas and methods for building higher
quality, more maintainable software. GPSA (a complex multi-platform
application) is written in COBOL, and much of the IDEAS material is
the result of experience gained while maintaining GPSA over several
years, platforms, and software versions.
3. USERGID.TXT is the GPSA User Guide. You will need this information
to operate GPSA successfully. In particular, you are advised to read
pages 1 through 22 before attempting to load an ORM.
All GPSA documents are created with the following word processor
parameters: [L/R mar:0.9",0.9"][Just:Left][Font:Courier 12cpi]
Installing GPSA
================
The installation program (INSTALL.COM) creates the default GPSA
directory structure; checks for the correct DOS version; checks for
sufficient RAM; and unzips GPSA212A.EXE, GPSA212B.EXE, and
GPSA212C.EXE into the C:\GPSA directory.
Select the Preview option to review the installation process.
YOU must add C:\GPSA to the DOS PATH command of your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file. Alternately, you may want to move the .EXE, .COM, and .BAT files
to a directory already on the DOS PATH command.
The GPSA21.LBR and GPSA.INI files MUST be located in the C:\GPSA
directory.
For additional installation information, see page 1 of the User Guide.
After installing GPSA, check that the GPSA evaluation package is
complete. The 25 files in the GPSA 2.12 evaluation package are listed
in PACKING.LST. Please contact COBOL Maintenance Technologies if any
file is missing.
Responsibilities: Ours and Yours
=================================
1. GPSA version 2.12 is distributed as a shareware program. It is NOT
public domain software, and it is NOT free.
2. Users are granted a limited license to use GPSA version 2.12 on a
trial basis for 30 days, for the purpose of evaluation and determining
if GPSA is suitable for their needs. Use of GPSA, except for this
limited purpose, requires the user to register the product.
3. COBOL Maintenance Technologies specifically grants users the right
to make copies of GPSA version 2.12 for others, providing they
include, unaltered, all files listed in PACKING.LST.
4. Anyone distributing GPSA version 2.12 for any kind of payment must
first contact COBOL Maintenance Technologies at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will automatically be granted to
distributors recognized by the ASP as adhering to its guidelines for
shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering GPSA
version 2.12 immediately (however COBOL Maintenance Technologies must
still be advised so the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the
latest version of GPSA.)
5. User Groups, Computer Clubs, Disk Vendors and Distributors,
Subscription Services, etc., should refer to the VENDOR.DOC file for
additional information relating to them.
6. BBS Sysops should refer to the SYSOP.DOC file for additional
information relating to them.
7. No user may modify GPSA in any way, without the express written
permission of the author, including, but not limited to, decompiling,
disassembling, debugging or otherwise reverse-engineering the programs
or screens library.
8. User of GPSA must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
GPSA is supplied as is. COBOL Maintenance Technologies disclaims all
warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the
warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. COBOL
Maintenance Technologies assumes no liability for damages, direct,
indirect or consequential, which may result from the use of GPSA.

What is Shareware?
===================
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details -- some request registration while others
require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
Registration
=============
Please use the registration form in REGISTER.DOC to register your copy

programmers who wanted more efficient (productive) methods and tools
for maintaining today's large complex software systems. This is a
programmer driven software package--if you're a programmer or
programmer/analyst we want to hear from you.
We welcome hearing about your system problems and functional
requirements. Send us a concise description of "where the system is
now, and where you want it to be", and we'll do our best to provide
you with suggestions for formulating solutions. This service is
available to users evaluating GPSA.
